On a website’s staff where guys are the majority, this Evans Blue interview was to be my chance at showing Revenant Media that I’m good for something besides standing around, looking pretty. I’d like to tell you that everything went off without a hitch, but then I’d be lying. You see… Adam jinxed me, the morning of the interview, saying, in a phone call, that Will Call wouldn’t have our tickets or passes. Oh, how right he was. Thanks Adam. Thanks for jinxing us. Thank you, Matisyn (Evans Blue) for working your own magic, setting things straight at Will Call, making a photo pass appear when there was none to be found.
Forty five minutes until showtime, Matisyn made time for this Texas girl with Revenant Media. Jenn (RM): If there’s one thing you want people to get out of your music, what would it be? Matisyn: I just want them to feel. We write pretty passionately, and emotionally, and I think that’s what most people get out of our stuff, and I think that’s kind of what we’re going for. That makes the connection even stronger. Jenn (RM): Do you have songs that have special meanings to you? Matisyn: They all have meaning. I mean, we kind of only write songs that… You know, we’ll write a song, and if it doesn’t feel - if we don’t feel it, then we usually don’t write. We don’t finish it. Songs that have made the album are all the ones that we were really feeling. From our first album, I think, ‘Over’ is one of my favorite songs, as far as, that feeling kind of thing. As far as the new album, there’s a song called ‘Painted’ which is probably one of my favorites off that album. Jenn (RM): Where do you get the ideas for your songs? 1st person or 3rd person? Matisyn: Most of them are first-person, but a lot of them are - I talk to people and they just kind of tell me what they’re feeling, and I kind of just take how I think I would deal with the situation, and just try to visualize it. Sometimes I write for me. Sometimes I write for people that mean something to me, but I haven’t dealt with the situation, but they have. Jenn (RM): Have you grown in your music, and as artists since Melody of Energetic Nature? Matisyn: Definitely. I mean, we… The first album, we were only a band for less than a year and we started writing together and now that we have eight months of touring under our belt and are kind of, actually, getting to know each other, and we’re able to really sit down and write, as a band, more so this time, than we did last time. Jenn (RM): How did the band come to form? Matisyn: A couple of guys we knew, but we mostly met each other on a musicians classified internet webpage. It’s hard to find people, and we were in a small town, and there were only so many people, and we started to branch out, looking in bigger cities, and it’s kind of what happened. Jenn (RM): How has the response been to The Pursuit Begins when the Portrayal of This Life Ends? Matisyn: Good. People are either going to say it’s better than the first album, or it’s not as good as the first album, but, for the most part, our fans have bought it, and they liked it, and I think that’s all we can really hope for. Jenn (RM): Do you work together to do the writing, or do you do most of the writing? Matisyn: I do all of the writing, as lyrically and I write the melody, as far as when I’m singing, and the music is more of a band thing. Parker writes the main ideas, mostly, and everyone else kind of puts their thing to that. Jenn (RM): What is it like touring with your label-mates, Breaking Benjamin and other big bands like Three Days Grace? Matisyn: It’s good. I mean, we get to see how guys have done it that have been together for years. We’re still pretty young, as far as, being on tour. Jenn (RM): You made the statement, “New albums are like new lovers - it’s best not to compare.” Do you love the two albums, completely, or do you feel you have changed with the new album? Matisyn: The first album was special, because it was something we’d never done before. The second album is darker, and if we weren’t feeling it, then it was not on the album. Jenn (RM): Is there anything I haven’t covered that you would like to add? Matisyn: Always check out our MySpace (www.myspace.com/evansblue). The site is still run by the band, and if anyone has any questions, or anything they’d like to know, just ask.
