Comic Book Artist and Data Entry Workers Weigh In

Feb 7, 2010 Melissa Kucirek
Comic book artist Kevin Mellon and Omaha resident Nicole Ferguson shed light on their challenges and rewards working from home. This email interview occurred February 2.

Working from home offers employees and the self-employed unique challenges, and at the same time, many rewarding benefits. Whether it’s to save costs of renting an office, having the flexibility to parent or the part-time job calls for evening tasks, as the economy faces grim realities, it’s the paycheck that matters most.

Comic book artist Kevin Mellon has been working from home as his main source of income for the past three years. His “Suicide Sisters” and “Gearhead” are just some of the examples of his work. His job allows him tangible results; he can have instant gratification something is complete. This certainly doesn’t come without distraction.

“Pretty much anything can be a distraction if I’m of a mind to be distracted,” Mellon, whose work area is located in the same space as his sleeping and TV viewing, said. “I have days where I’m insanely and intensely focused and nothing can stop me from working till my eyes are blurry and my carpal tunnel is five hours past the breaking point.

“Other day’s it’s like pulling teeth from an alligator to get myself to sit at the desk for more than five minutes at a time without finding something else to do instead of work.”

Nicole Ferguson’s home office is set in a secure location. She works three jobs at home: locate specialist for various contracted clients, data entry “keyer” for a health information company and full-time mom/wife.
